Wednesday 8th August saw Donaghadee hold it’s much anticipated 5k run as part of the town’s annual festival. The event had 300 entrants, the biggest number to date, attracting all ages and abilities.
The event was organised for the first time by the town’s Dee Runners, with the help of some local traders and businesses such as The Spar at Hightrees Garage, The Cabin, Country Kids Day Nursery and Flavour First, making it a real community effort and you couldn’t help but feel swept up in the public spirit which embraced the town as runners from far and wide lined up along the town’s pier to get started.
Participants included runners from other local clubs including Scrabo Striders, North Down Athletics Club and Ballygalget Athletics Club as well as those from further afield and the route took them through the town’s picturesque Commons and back, around the iconic lighthouse and along the Commons again, finally being won by Taylor Glover from Morpeth Harriers who finished in a very impressive 16 minutes and 23 seconds.
It’s safe to say the event was a great success and enjoyed by all those who took part. The organisers are already planning for next year and if you would like to find out more just visit the Dee Runners Facebook page or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
